RAINBOW NURSERY
South of England Rare Breeds Centre

A Horticultural Training Project

Here at Rainbow Nursery we offer a fantastic range of plants which have been tended and grown by adults with a learning disability:

  • Bedding plants
  • Hanging baskets
  • Herbs
  • Patio plants
  • Perennials
  • Bulbs
  • Vegetable plants

We also offer a planter and hanging basket making service to meet your specific needs and budget. The benefits to you and your garden of buying your plants from Rainbow Nursery include:

  • High quality naturally grown healthy plants free of the pests and diseases which can be carried by more intensively grown plants
  • Friendly enthusiastic staff at hand to offer help and advice
  • Lower prices than most garden centres and DIY stores

All income from your purchases helps support the work of Canterbury Oast Trust and the Rainbow Nursery is open to everyone including non-visitors of the Rare Breeds Centre, so do call in and see us and please tell your friends.

The main plant nursery growing area on a 2 acre site consists of 2 polytunnels, a glasshouse and a net tunnel alongside 5 plant and vegetable growing beds.

Our Plant and Craft centre opened in April 2000 and continues to develop as our main sales outlet. The Nursery grows thousands of trays of bedding plants which are sold to the public, including some regular orders for local businesses. The nursery also provides the Rare Breeds Centre with tubs and hanging baskets, which are much admired by visitors, cut flowers and vegetables. They also propagate a wide variety of perennials and shrubs.

Trainees working at the nursery gain specific skills in horticulture and develop self-confidence through interacting with visitors, who purchase products in the sales area. The team work - both together and as individuals - in a relaxed atmosphere designed to generate a positive and supportive working environment.
