A WORK & TRAINING RESTAURANT FOR ADULTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES - SUPPORTED & RUN BY CANTERBURY OAST TRUST

The Granary is a commercial restaurant serving the general public visiting The South of England Rare Breeds Centre, a major tourist attraction.

Residents from within the Trust's 15 homes (and external placements from the local community) have the opportunity to experience working in a real commercial environment, and to interact with the general public. They are expected to work in all areas of the kitchen and restaurant, although we do our best to give everyone the opportunity to work in the area of their choice.

Trainees work a whole day so they get the chance of preparing, cooking, serving and then clearing up. During the busy period of the season, everyone helps to serve and look after our visitors.

Trainees also have the opportunity of helping in "The Falcons", a busy conference and function department.

Placements are generally arranged on a Monday to Friday basis, with special arrangements for the weekends.

Trainees need to have basic communication skills and be steady on their feet.

Trainees must also be able to manage personal hygiene. Access to the kitchen for wheelchair users is limited, due to Health & Safety precautions.

Trainees are provided with appropriate shirts and protective clothing. All tasks are supervised and on-going training is carried out to assess skills development.
